Center for Faith and Work
JULY 12, 2017

Dear {first},

In past years, I have shared my recommendations for summer reading and decided that perhaps it’s not too late to share three books I would encourage you to read this season:

1) The Patient Ferment of the Early Church: The Improbable Rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire - Building upon a lifetime of research, church historian Alan Kreider challenges conventional wisdom regarding the unexpected growth of the early church and advances the thesis that patience was the critical virtue that witnessed the gospel powerfully during Roman occupation.

2) Norse Mythology - Neil Gaiman presents an updated vision of this ancient world which profoundly inspired the imaginations of Tolkien and Lewis. These stories will allow your mind to wander into a myth that makes the gospel shine all the brighter.

3) Charity and Its Fruits: Living in the Light of God’s Love (Kyle Strobel, Editor) - Every summer I read an Edwards book and I return to this classic with the important caveat to read Strobel’s book which reproduces these sermons using the Yale edition which is more accurate to the original sermons. His introduction and notes are particularly helpful in seeing the big picture of this prodigious work on love.

Whatever you do this summer, I hope it is in the accompaniment of great books like these that expand our vision of God’s intimate and pervasive work in our world. Also, for much lighter reading, let me draw your attention to our CFW Year-End Report which is a brief recap of this year’s events, as well as an update on some of our flagship programs, all of which aim to embody the kind of soulful work that the gospel enables. Each title in the report links to a corresponding resource on our website. We hope you enjoy exploring our programs and resources from this ministry year.

Sincerely,

David H. Kim, Executive Director, Center for Faith & Work
