Dear {first}, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself: I am Cory Maxwell-Coghlan, the new Director of the Center for Faith and Work at Redeemer. As a Gotham alum (G16), and someone who has been working with CFW as a writer and teacher of theology for several years, I am honored to be serving as the new director, and I look forward to sharing my vision for this great ministry over the coming months. I step into this new role at an extraordinary moment in history. As we come to terms with the havoc and disruption of COVID-19, there is much to grieve and lament. Tens of thousands have lost their lives, healthcare systems are being overrun, millions are filing for unemployment, and markets are collapsing under the weight of societal shutdowns. This virus has reordered the world, and permanently changed the way we work. We are witnessing significant shifts: innovation has sped up, a newfound solidarity may break patterns of polarization and division, essential workers are being rightly celebrated and valued, working from home will break open the possibilities of a digital workplace, and shelter-in-place orders will facilitate reconnection with loved ones and foster a rare moment of collective rest. So as we mourn the destruction of life, and prepare for darker days ahead, there is reason for hope in this Lenten season. The journey toward Easter is an invitation to immerse ourselves within a larger story which promises that all suffering is momentary. That our pain and our loss is all temporary because the creator of the universe is renewing the world (Rev. 21). In other words: from death comes new life. Let us pray that God will use this crisis, like others before it, to usher many back to faith. This is a unique opportunity for the church to engage our hurting world, and programs like Gotham are as important now than ever for training and discipling the next generation of Christian leaders. Over the coming months we will host a series of virtual conversations with industry leaders on the changing nature of work in various sectors, create and share resources to help you pursue rhythms of prayer, devotion, and rest, and run our Gotham Info Session virtually. And we will continue to share helpful content like this list of COVID-19 resources we’ve compiled in partnership with The Common. Stay tuned, and know that we are praying for and with you. Cory Maxwell-Coghlan New Director AnnouncementLast month, the network of Redeemer Presbyterian Churches announced that Scott Calgaro will depart as the Director of CFW. Scott led CFW through a challenging season of transition over the last couple of years, and we are so grateful for his dedication and passion for CFW. Cory Maxwell-Coghlan assumed the new role on March 16, 2020. By way of brief introduction, Cory is a Gotham alumnus (G16) with a degree in Theology from Harvard. He has been instrumental in updating the content in CFW programs such as Gotham and the 7-Week Class. Numerous people have benefitted from Cory’s teaching, writing, and guidance and we look forward to his deepened involvement in leadership. Laura Rogers and the church teaching/pastoral staff and interns (Jeff, Milla, Mark, Alan, Judson) will work with Cory as we build CFW for the next generation of Christian leaders for our city.
