Dear {first},

We are in a unique moment. In 30 days, we’ll elect a President who will lead us through a season of continuing challenges and division. Many have noted that the church seems to be divided as well. We find it hard to “bear with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2),” especially when discussing politics. There is a sense of resignation that this is just the way things are.

But as Christians, we are a people of hope with a powerful call to be involved in creation, to “fill the earth and subdue it.” Vince Bacote writes, “while it is vitally important to proclaim the gospel, introduce people to Jesus, and help them move toward faithful discipleship... it is also tremendously important for Christians to see that it has always been our responsibility to care for the world, cultivating the flourishing of life through our activity in culture, politics, education, medicine, business, and every public arena.”

We are living examples of the large-scale renewal that is sure to come. We, alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ (whether we agree on politics or not), are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), signposts pointing us to a world that is whole. As we collectively pray, “thy kingdom come, on earth as in heaven,” we are asking God to set things right—now. As N.T. Wright says, “Our task at present … is to live as resurrection people in between Easter and the final day, with our Christian life, corporate and individual, in both worship and mission, as a sign of the first and a foretaste of the second.”

We can move forward with the assurance that our presence in the public arena is important to God and is worth wrestling with. If the idea of calling or mission beyond Sunday is new to you, we invite you to join us for our Faith & Work 101 beginning October 5 over Zoom. We hope the class will build that sense of hope in God’s calling for you in your worklife and beyond.

Faith & Work 101 Begins Oct 5

The question of faith and work is really a question of calling. Through our Faith & Work 101, we’ll demystify the idea of calling and help you develop a clearer sense of God's calling for you. Over the course of 7 consecutive Monday evenings beginning October 5 and ending November 16, we’ll provide a biblical overview of faith and work with the goal of helping you deepen your understanding and experience of everyday work. We'll meet from 7 to 9 p.m over Zoom. Registration is required. More>
