Artists-in-
Residence
Announced for
Spring 2014
The Center for Faith & Work is pleased to welcome our Spring 2014 artists-in-residence: filmmaker Ben Stamper and musician Julia Easterlin.
Both artists were chosen from invited proposals that explored the idea of what it means to be “Fully Human”. Each resident artist is now in the process of creating a brand new work on that theme, as it’s uniquely expressed through his or her respective forms of film and music.
Filmmaker Ben Stamper’s commissioned work is currently taking the form of five short contemplative pieces, each based on one of New York City’s five boroughs. The premiere of Stamper’s commissioned work will be screened and accompanied by the performance of a live musical score at CFW’s City Rhythms: Film event. The event will take place on April 24th at 7:30pm at Redeemer’s W83 building.
Vocal musician Julia Easterlin’s new commissioned work with CFW will take the form of an acapella piece for multiple voices, to be presented later this year. Best known for her use of looping technologies, Easterlin will be familiar to CFW regulars from last year’s CFW Conference, where she performed two pieces and spoke on a panel, discussing the theme of “Humanization” in work.
Further exploring CFW’s year-long theme of “humanization,” each resident artists’ commissioned work are responses to the following prompts: How do you interpret the notion of “fully human” creatively? In not being fully human, do we experience a partial whole? What advantage does your artistic form have in articulating this theme? What’s unique about your artistic form (i.e. in its visual or aural nature) regarding the theme of humanization?
In practice of arts patronage, the Center for Faith & Work’s artist-in-residence program has a two-pronged purpose: to support emerging and established local artists through the commissioning of new work, and to celebrate and contribute to the intrinsic value of the arts as a vital fabric of the city. Being devoted to the flourishing of all New York City, the Center for Faith & Work is proud to offer selected resident artists the opportunity, resources, financing, and support to create works of art that contribute to the excellency of New York’s rich and creative culture.
More about the artists:

Julia Easterlin is a vocalist and loop artist who wields composition, production and performance in one fell swoop. One part siren and one part technologist, she uses looping hardware to build a one-woman chorus live onstage. This rare sound has driven Julia to recent performances at the venerable Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, SXSW in Austin TX, the MIDEM Conference in Cannes FR, the CollegeMusicJournal (CMJ) Festival in New York City, and the TEDxWomen Conference in Los Angeles.
