Mary Vanden
Berg:
Covenant as
the Foundation
of a
Renewed
Community
Professor Mary Vanden Berg gives a theological overview of the Biblical concept of covenant as a central and critical theme in redemptive history. God’s covenantal nature challenges us in considering the integral importance of community in our lives.
Mary L. Vanden Berg is a professor of Systematic Theology and Associate Academic Dean at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her research interest is theological anthropology. Her specific interests lie in questions surrounding aging and dementia, as well as inquiry into what it means to be human for those at the margins of life. Seminary teaching is a second career for Mary. She sensed God's call to seminary in her late thirties and followed that call through a Master's degree in Theological studies that focused on the Old Testament, to doctoral studies in Systematic Theology. She began teaching full-time seven years ago after completing her doctoral work. Mary has been married for 34 years. She and her husband have three married children and two grandchildren with another expected in early December. She is the chair of the Worship Committee at her local church and enjoys teaching and speaking for adult education classes at churches in the West Michigan area where she lives.
