New York Night
Visions:
A Glimpse
Highlight

By: Deborah Fung

During our Glimpse New York Night Visions, we first prepared silk paintings by drawing lines with gutta resist.  While these first pieces were set aside to dry, the group worked on a second piece, a New York skyline.  This larger image was pre-drawn in gutta on twelve separate pieces of silk.   Each participant selected and painted one piece of the skyline.  Upon completion, the twelve pieces were reassembled into a larger painting of the city skyline.  Although participants worked independently on their portion of the skyline, the reassembled image captures the energy, rhythm, and the experience of running up alongside crowds and strangers that is customary in New York City.  This led into our discussion of favorite night scenes, the possible isolating effects of darkness and night hours and its potential danger, as well as shining moments of neighborliness and community strength during power outages imposed by Hurricane Sandy.  Among the individually drawn images, there were a wonderful variety of subjects and color schemes, ranging from bold kaleidoscopic designs, imagery from nature, earthy genre scenes, and cityscapes.  These images offer a glimpse of the incredible diversity of human imagination and expression.

CFW Glimpses were part of the 2013 Humanizing Work Conference. A Glimpse is a cultural event (1) based in New York City, (2) experienced in community, (3) which points toward evidence of God’s glory & sovereignty over both the brokenness & beauty of the culture we inhabit.
