In the city that never sleeps, restlessness can feel like our default mode of existence. Yet God has equipped us with tools and promises that bring rest even in the most unrestful times. Come learn how Sabbath allows the still, small voice of God to be heard amidst the buzz. Join author Judith Shulevitz (The New Yorker; NY Times) and pastor David Kim to develop tools for keeping Sabbath, and to discuss how and why rest is essential to knowing God.

Judith Shulevitz

Judith Shulevitz became a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times in the spring of 2015. An editor, critic and journalist, she studied French literature at Yale University. Most recently, she was a senior editor at The New Republic. She was previously the editor of Lingua Franca, a magazine about academia and ideas; the culture editor of Slate; and the deputy editor of New York Magazine. From 2001 to 2003 she wrote a biweekly column for The New York Times Book Review.

Her book “The Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time” (2010) is an opinionated history of one of the most important ideas in Western religious thought — that to thrive, societies must designate set times in which work stops and the rest of life occurs. The book was one of The Times’s 100 notable books of 2010 and one of The Forward’s top five; was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award; and was awarded a medal by the American Library Association.

Lolita K. Jackson

Lolita Jackson currently serves as the Special Advisor to the Senior Director of Climate Policy and Programs in the NYC Mayor’s Office. She administers activities for New York City’s participation in global climate and resilience networks, and is NYC liaison to all foreign and domestic governments in the area of climate. Lolita is part of the team responsible for OneNYC, NYC’s overall resilience plan. Prior to her appointment to this role, she held numerous positions within the Mayor’s Office. Immediately after Hurricane Sandy, she was named to the management team of the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency, and was named Director of External Affairs of the Housing Recovery Office. Lolita was previously Director of Special Projects for the NYC Mayor’s Office, where she was in charge of operational city agencies for the Second Avenue Subway and Barclays Center projects, and Manhattan Director of Community Affairs.

Prior to her career in government, Ms. Jackson was Vice President for Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where she worked for over a decade in sales, marketing and business development and helped manage a $10 billion product line. Ms. Jackson is an alumna of the Penn School of Engineering. She is the President of the Class of 1989 and is a 2007 recipient of the Penn Alumni Award of Merit. In addition to her involvements at Penn, Ms. Jackson is a Trustee of the Children’s Aid Society, British American Project US Advisory Board Chair, Royal Society of Arts US Chair, and a member of the US-Japan Leadership Program Fellows Advisory Council.

She has attended Redeemer for 22 years, and is a past deaconess. Lolita has participated in six missions trips with Redeemer, and was Chair of the RISE campaign for the Downtown congregation, of which she is a member.

In her spare time, Ms. Jackson is a professional singer, having graced stages in London, , Berlin, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Carnegie Hall and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
