Kyle Werner
Kyle Werner is a composer whose interest in showcasing performers’ expressive capabilities has led to collaborations with world-class musicians and ensembles such as the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Grand Rapids Symphony, Axiom Brass, Windscape, guitarist Jordan Dodson, and members of Eighth Blackbird. His works have been performed at the Colburn School, Hindemith Music Centre, Manhattan School of Music, Midwest Composers’ Symposium, MusicX Festival, Opera on Tap, Palais de Fontainebleau, Society for American Music Annual Conference, University of Cincinnati, University of Michigan, Rutgers University, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Tenth Presbyterian Church, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, the Yamaha Piano Salon, and Greenwich House Music School. Werner has also been composer-in-residence at Chamber Music Campania in Varano, Italy. He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Composition at Manhattan School of Music, where he received the Lloyd Gelassen Fellowship Fund Scholarship and the Nicholas Flagello Award. His doctoral dissertation Robert Mann and the Composers of His Time discusses the life and work of violinist/composer and Juilliard String Quartet founder Robert Mann, for whom Werner worked as archivist and assistant for seven years. He completed a Bachelor of Music in Composition, summa cum laude, at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, in addition to summer study at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. His primary teachers have included Joel Hoffman, Michael Fiday, Susan Botti, and J. Mark Stambaugh. A passionate music educator, he is currently a member of the faculty at MSM Precollege, the Geneva Conservatory, and the School of Mahanaim. He is regularly involved with the Center for Faith & Work, having completed the Gotham Fellowship in 2013, co-led an Artists Vocational Intensive, participated in the Artist Residency Intensive, been a panelist and activity leader for the Summer Ministry Intensive, and most recently received an Artist Grant which supported the composition of his String Quartet No. 1. As a writer he has been a contributor to the Gospel Coalition, Faith & Work Study Bible, CFW blog, Geneva Journal, Cincinnati Enquirer, and MusicX Festival blog.
