What expectations do you have with respect to your calling? Expectations play a hidden, but very important role in shaping our motivations for work as well as a deeper sense of purpose. The wrong expectations can make a great job seem miserable. Yet, our expectations often go unexamined and unchallenged. During this kick-off event, David will be exploring how the Bible presents a very important context which transforms the way we view our work and our sense of calling. The gospel changes everything and realigns our expectations in such a way that connects our daily work with God's redemptive purposes.

The Calling Series

The Bible sets forth a unique doctrine that Christians are people “called” by God for particular purposes. When we live in line with this calling, we experience a greater fullness of what it means to be a child of God. This is an absolutely critical doctrine to understand, internalize and experience. Every Christian needs to understand the Biblical notion of calling as it provides an important guide in thinking through the bigger questions of our identity and the meaning and purpose of our lives.

To that end, we have designed a two-part lecture series on the theme of calling. What happens when expectations misalign with reality? Come and hear further teaching on this topic and engage in a reflective exercise to process questions of calling in your vocational life.

The second part in this series will take place on March 17, 2016 on the theme of Calling: Wisdom in Action.

David H. Kim

David oversees all the ministries of the Center for Faith & Work as Executive Director and is the Pastor of Faith and Work of Redeemer. Prior to this role, David served as the Director of the Gotham Fellowship, developing and teaching its intensive curriculum while providing spiritual direction. Prior to joining CFW in 2007, David was a Chaplain at Princeton University, where he also served as the Founder and Executive Director of Manna Christian Fellowship for over 12 years.

Although David has lived in New York since 2010, he grew up in the Philadelphia area. He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, his M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary, and his Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his studies focused on the public theology of Abraham Kuyper. Currently, he is pursuing his D.Min. at Fuller Theological Seminary in the area of faith and culture. David has a passion for making the gospel real to life, especially in the context of work. He’s written a devotional book that connects the narrative of Scripture to our lives today: Glimpses of a Greater Glory: A Devotional through the Storyline of the Bible. He’s also the author of 20 and Something: Have the Time of Your Life (and Figure it All Out Too). David is on the board for the Center for Public Justice and is a frequent speaker at universities and churches. David lives with his wife, Jane, near Bryant Park.
